PT's are Doctors

Did you know that most physical therapists are now ‘Doctors of Physical Therapy (DPT)’?

By the year 2020, ALL physical therapists will possess Doctor of Physical Therapy medical licenses. The current college educational requirements for individuals to become physical therapists typically takes 5-7 years to complete as a full-time student.

In many schools around the country, the physical therapy program is located within the medical school facility, with physical therapy students and physicians attending the same courses together, at times. All physical therapists also are required to successfully complete multiple doctoral internships in hospitals, private medical and healthcare facilities, rehabilitation centers are other related health and wellness environments in order to receive their Doctor of Physical Therapy Degree.

Physical Therapists are educated and licensed to provide rehabilitative prevention and wellness instruction and therapy services, as well as diagnose and treat injuries, conditions, illnesses and diseases related in any way to the musculoskeletal and neuromuscular systems. PT's are also the only licensed and trained musculoskeletal professional who is qualified to do all of the above. It is the goal of the American Physical Therapy Association for physical therapists to become "The Healthcare Practitioner of Choice" for all musculoskeletal and neuromusculoskeletal conditions.

As of January 2008, there are now 44 states in the United States that have "direct access". This means that individuals can be evaluated and treated by a licensed physical therapist without requiring a physicians prescription for conditions relating to musculoskeletal and neuromusculoskeletal conditions. There may be some insurance plans that require a physicians prescription or referral for PT, in order for those visits to be covered, whereas others, such as Medicare, just require that individual to be seen by a physician within 30-90 days from beginning PT services.
